13 Moons Contest - Leaf Moon
Done with coloured pencils, pencil, and pen, with a wee bit of smoothing out of the background in gimp.
This is for the
contest. Unfortunately, I think I concentrated too little on the design of an actual kimono, and more on the picture over all, which I think maybe was less of the point. Oops! But either way, here it is!
Leaf Moon - called “Zaagibagaa-giizis” by the Anishnaabe (Chippewa/Ojibway) people.
This moon is associated with late spring/early summer; namely the months of May and June. Spring is ebbing and summer is on its way. People are caring for newly sprouted crops and the risk of overnight frost diminishes. The weather is getting warmer and the days are getting longer. Everything is green and growing. This is also the season when the black flies are most vicious. Moths and butterflies are abundant. Other tribes call this time: “When women weed corn” (Algonquin), “When the leaves come out” (Cree), “Mulberry Moon” (Muscokee), “Time of the big leaf” (Mohawk).
